Job Summary
Install and repair structures, conductors, and equipment for electrical power and distribution systems while stringing wire conductors between poles and adjusting slack. Splice cables for overhead transmission lines, erect wooden and steel poles, and transmit towers. Utilize aerial lift equipment to remove and install hardware, open and close switches to isolate or energize line sections, and test lines for potential before installing grounding devices. Supervise conductor stringing operations, train apprentice linemen, and direct underground utility location. Operate construction machinery, calculate conductor sag, and hang travelers from poles or towers. Work with limited supervision, adhering to all safety policies, and may relocate or attend training classes as required.
Required Qualifications
- received their training in an approved forty-two (42) month apprenticeship program
- certified testing program
- seven (7) years of continuous substation/line construction/maintenance experience
- working knowledge of all aspects of substation/line work
- capability and expertise to work independently if required
- valid class "B" commercial driver's license
- certification for light cranes, boom trucks, etc.
- capable of calculating set up locations for stringing operations
- capable of operating all const. equipment if needed
- capable of using plumb bob, pulling guy wires, and ensuring that poles are plumb before dead ending cond.
- capable of hanging and operating carts for spacing bundle conductors
- capable of working from hanging ladders, walk boards, or baskets on booms for clipping, dead ending cond., etc.
- capable of hanging travelers from poles or towers
- capable of setting guard poles, string lead line, string cond., sag, clip, and dead-end cond.
- capable of reading and interpreting blueprints
- capable of using rubber gloves, hot sticks, or the live line "bare hand" method to work on and/or repair energized lines to avoid interruption of service
- May be required to relocate as work requirements demand
- May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems
- May attend training classes or seminars to gather knowledge of new processes, safety regulations and/or refresher training
- Works with limited supervision
