Transition Specialist (Special Education Program Specialist)

Job Summary

Coordinate districtwide secondary transition services for students receiving special education services, including monitoring compliance with IDEA Secondary Transition requirements and Indicator 13. Review secondary IEPs for transition components prior to finalization and provide technical assistance to teachers regarding measurable post-secondary goals and annual objectives. Meet individually with students to administer assessments, career interest inventories, and surveys to identify employment and independent living goals. Develop partnerships with community agencies and coordinate work-based learning opportunities, job shadowing, and career fairs. Provide professional development on transition planning best practices and compile compliance reports for the Director of Special Education. Work independently across office, classroom, and community settings, maintaining strict confidentiality of student and personnel information.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, School Counseling, Social Work, Vocational Rehabilitation, or a closely related field
  • Valid New Mexico Educator License
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with secondary special education students
  • Experience with IDEA, transition planning, and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Experience collaborating with community agencies and transition service providers
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Knowledge of New Mexico Special Education Technical Evaluation and Assessment Manual (NM TEAM)
  • Knowledge of IDEA Secondary Transition requirements and Indicator 13
  • Knowledge of IEP development and compliance requirements
  • Knowledge of Age-appropriate transition assessments
  • Knowledge of Postsecondary education and career planning
  • Knowledge of Community agencies supporting transition services
  • Knowledge of Vocational rehabilitation services
  • Knowledge of FERPA confidentiality requirements
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and district software applications
  • Ability to Interpret federal and state special education regulations
  • Ability to Review IEPs for transition compliance
  • Ability to Provide coaching and technical assistance to staff
  • Ability to Build partnerships with community agencies and employers
  • Ability to Analyze compliance data and prepare reports
  • Ability to Work independently and exercise sound professional judgment
  • Ability to Maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to Develop positive relationships with students, parents, educators, and community partners
  • Ability to Organize multiple projects while meeting deadlines
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, communicate verbally and electronically, operate office equipment, and travel throughout the district to school sites and community agencies
  • Occasionally required to lift instructional materials and office supplies weighing up to 25 pounds

  • Supports the mission of the Special Education Department through timely, accurate, and professional completion of all assigned responsibilities
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test
  • Comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1968
  • Pass a background check
  • Provide necessary documentation qualifications

Desired Qualifications
