Job Summary
Supervise and coordinate train crew activities for switching railroad cars within yard facilities to facilitate loading, unloading, and train assembly. Receive switching orders from management or customers, notify conductors via radio or verbal signals, and direct track switch operations and coupling. Manage cars online through RMI reports, ensure accurate daily train lists and crew work sheets, and approve man-hours within your territory. Initiate investigations into accidents and incidents, analyze locomotive event recorders, and monitor track conditions including slow orders to maintain productivity. Download and read event recorders, understand car hire and demurrage factors, and apply federal railroad regulations to ensure safe, efficient operations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of three years prior experience in trainmen functions
- Current locomotive engineers and conductor's certification
- Knowledge of and skills in applying basic federal railroad regulations, guidelines and rules
- Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form
- Ability to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems
- Ability to effectively communicate instructions, directions, processes, procedures, safety rules and regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form
- Ability to train switch crews and other yard personnel to perform job-related duties
- Ability to provide training related to federal and company regulations, rules, safety guidelines and preventive maintenance
- Ability to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base
- Ability to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations
- Ability to talk to and effectively communicate with co-workers, yard personnel, switching crew, engineers, railroad officials and others in a clear, concise, courteous, efficient and professional manner
- Ability to pass training and required testing
- Valid Driver's License
- 50%-75% travel
- Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 80 lbs
