Job Summary
Training Constable (Field/Police Training Officer) delivers practical, operational training to recruits and members through instruction, coaching, and performance evaluation; supports recruit and in-service training to ensure recruits and members are competent, operationally ready, and deployable in alignment with ASPS standards and legislative requirements; responsibilities include hands-on training in operational/controlled environments, coaching and mentoring recruits, assessing performance through observation and documentation (e.g., DORs), participating in mandatory training delivery (e.g., use-of-force, firearms), maintaining training records, and contributing to program improvement; requires adherence to ASPS standards and professional conduct.
Required Qualifications
- A university degree in Criminology, Police Studies, Criminal Justice, Adult Education or other behavioral sciences (Psychology, Sociology, etc.), supplemented by four (4) years of related experience as a current or former police officer eligible for appointment as a Police Officer in the Province of Alberta in accordance with the Police Act (Alberta).
- Equivalency: Education or experience considered on the basis of: One year of experience for one year of education.
- Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, or training personnel in a policing environment, including the ability to assess, evaluate, and document performance in multiple settings.
- Experience delivering structured training or instruction within policing or public safety environments.
- Strong knowledge of applicable legislation (Criminal Code of Canada, Police Act (Alberta), Charter) and ability to apply and enforce professional policing and training standards, including addressing underperformance.
- Ability to maintain mandatory training and recertification requirements, including use-of-force qualifications.
- Assets: Training-related certifications or education (e.g., adult education, facilitation, instructional techniques)
