Job Summary
Provide care and training for a marine mammal collection including phocids (harbor and spotted seals), Northern fur seals, and Steller sea lions; perform routine husbandry, diet preparation, habitat maintenance, and record-keeping; deliver public demonstrations and interactive programs; mentor assistant trainers, interns, and volunteers; maintain life-support and water quality systems; and support development of husbandry techniques while working in outdoor environments with emphasis on guest service, safety, and teamwork. Requires SCUBA certification and the ability to pass a dive physical; flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime; Spanish language skills preferred.
Required Qualifications
- Two years paid professional experience with care and training of marine mammals, or equivalent of four years’ experience
- Public presentation experience and comfort required
- SCUBA certification and the ability to pass a dive physical required
- Willingness to provide guest service above expectations
- Bachelor’s degree in related discipline preferred
- Multilingual, Spanish preferred
- Schedule flexibility including evenings/weekends/holidays and overtime
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Care for and maintain marine mammal collection and habitats
- Present public and classroom demonstrations educating public with approved Institutional information
- Execute routine husbandry procedures to maintain federal, state and institutional guidelines
- Act as mentor and role model for assistant trainers, interns and volunteers
- Safety and PPE procedures awareness
