Job Summary
Conduct safe, efficient train and yard operations by coupling and uncoupling cars, throwing switches, and operating all forms of motive power including remote control. Perform switching duties to facilitate loading and unloading, while inspecting locomotives, trains, and equipment for compliance with FRA rules. Manage train orders, track warrants, and waybills through written and verbal communication with dispatch, customers, and connecting railroads. Maintain accurate records of car handling and repairs, responding quickly to visual signals and precise control adjustments. Work in all weather conditions, including outside in severe temperatures and inside vehicles or cabs, adhering to strict safety procedures and reporting requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- Certified Conductor and/or Locomotive Engineer
- 3 or more years experience on a railroad
- Experience working on-call basis and/or varying shift schedules
- Must be able to report to work safely with two-hour notice
- Complete annual training and pass safety operating rules examination
- Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
- Must pass all required assessments
- Must pass a background screening
- Must pass a pre-employment medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test
- Must obtain and maintain engineer and conductor certifications
- Strict disciplinary policy regarding inability to report to work within proper time frame, or failure to accept a call for work
- This positions is governed by a collective bargaining agreement; membership is required
- Active employees must complete one year in current position or craft before applying for positions
- Walk long distance over uneven terrain, work around moving equipment, climb, ascend and descend locomotives
- Medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 83 pounds on a rare basis
- Reach, bend, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, sit, stand, balance and lift in the course of duties

- Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places
- Ride on the outside of rail equipment for long periods of time
- Must meet color vision requirements as described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations
- Must meet hearing acuity requirements as described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations

- All INRD employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required safety training, proactively promote safety at work and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries
- Must wear protective equipment including hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses
