Job Summary
Operate switches and brakes to move trains safely between tracks, build trains by attaching and detaching freight cars, and inspect for rules compliance and order accuracy. Maintain facility and equipment to RJ Corman Look Good standards while ensuring safe working conditions and proper PPE usage. Safely operate company vehicles and other machinery, practice effective radio etiquette and face-to-face communication, and foster a friendly team environment. Full-time hours vary according to customer needs with operations running 24/7. Previous railroad or industrial switching experience is preferred, though not required.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
- Knowledge of equipment cleaning standards and procedures
- Ability to operate a range of vehicles and machinery in a safe and responsible manner
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
- Overall willingness to learn new skills
- Able to perform physical, strenuous work in all weather conditions
- Requires constant standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and balancing in a safe manner, and walking on uneven surfaces such as ballast
- Requires frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching
- Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 lbs
- Able to push and pull with up to 150 lbs of force to throw a switch
- Must be able to perform duties under direct supervision, when given general direction with limited discretion
- Must be available for weekend shifts (implied by 24/7 operations and varying hours)
- Must pass pre-employment criminal background checks
- Must pass substance abuse testing, including a urine drug test
