Job Summary
Assist the Train Engineer with moving rail equipment and managing track switches to facilitate loading and unloading. Maintain an orderly rail yard by inspecting all equipment for damage, ensuring compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations, and reporting incidents immediately. Lead daily job briefings with supervisors and crew, maintaining clear communication via radio or hand signals while moving locomotives. Wear required PPE and navigate the yard safely under varying weather conditions, including rain, snow, and ice. This role involves on-the-job training at the Norfolk Southern Walkertown, NC Terminal, with shifts typically running 8-12 hours. Applicants must live within a 45-minute commute and hold a valid driver's license.
Required Qualifications
- valid driver's license
- advanced knowledge of the railroad industry from vocational education, apprenticeship, on-the-job training, or similar experience
- ability to pass a vision and hearing test
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- ability to live within a 45 minute commute of the business location
- ability to work in an environment which can be hazardous at times
- physical ability to see and hear fast-moving equipment and be able to move so that you can remain safe always
- ability to travel throughout the yard and the transfer station either by walking and/or driving
