Job Summary
Sergeant, Traffic provides frontline supervisory leadership for traffic enforcement operations at the shift or unit level, overseeing 4 to 12 constables, coordinating resources to address traffic risks and incidents, ensuring compliance with legislation and professional standards, and mentoring and managing performance. The role emphasizes supervising enforcement activities, conducting briefings and scheduling, applying policing authorities, coordinating multi-agency operations, and maintaining officer and public safety, with responsibilities including incident leadership, evidence integrity, disclosure readiness, and media/community engagement. Candidates should have a university degree relevant to law enforcement, minimum seven years in operational policing with traffic enforcement and supervision, and strong knowledge of Criminal Code, Police Act (Alberta), Charter, and Traffic Safety Act (Alberta), plus demonstrated coaching, decision-making under pressure, and ability to coordinate complex operations.
Required Qualifications
- A university degree in Criminology, Police Studies, Criminal Justice, Adult Education or other behavioral sciences (Psychology, Sociology, etc.) relevant to law enforcement, plus seven (7) years of operational policing experience, including traffic enforcement, fatal collision investigation and supervision.
