Job Summary

Conduct traffic signal timing studies, optimization, and implementation while performing travel time runs to evaluate traffic conditions. Build and adjust traffic models using Synchro to develop coordinated signal timing plans and execute system integration activities. Deploy and support field ITS and traffic control equipment, conducting inventory collection and frequent local or nationwide travel for implementation. Lead or support traffic engineering studies, impact analyses, and safety evaluations to improve real-time systems. Requires a PE license, five years of traffic operations experience, and proficiency with Synchro, SimTraffic, and Tru-Traffic. Located in Virginia Beach with a hybrid schedule including office, remote, and field work.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required (in any U.S. state)
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in traffic operations or transportation engineering, particularly in signal timing
  • Strong understanding of transportation engineering principles and practices
  • Experience with the following software/tools: Synchro, SimTraffic, Tru-Traffic
  • Experience with ATSPM (Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures)
  • Experience with traffic signal controllers and ATMS platforms
  • Solid communication skills, both written and verbal
  • A detail-oriented mindset and a strong interest in traffic operations, safety, and real-time systems improvement
  • This role requires someone based within a reasonable commuting distance of Virginia Beach, VA
  • Engage in frequent local or nationwide travel as required for field work and implementation

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with the following software/tools: ATSPM (Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures) is highly desirable
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level II (or willingness to obtain – financial assistance is provided)
  • Familiarity with public agency processes, field data collection, and ITS implementation
