Job Summary
Track Laborer performs physical labor to construct, alter, repair, maintain, and demolish railroad tracks and related structures as part of a local Line Maintenance crew. Duties include carrying and placing track materials with hand tools, attaching rails to ties, removing spikes, lifting and positioning crossties, connecting and disconnecting rail, moving and tamping ballast, raising tracks and crossings, cutting materials with torches and saws, drilling with various motors, coordinating with heavy equipment, participating in safety meetings, and wearing appropriate PPE. Requires travel to multiple job sites, ability to lift 75 pounds, and capability to work in inclement weather; prior experience with hand tools and basic rail maintenance is preferred.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver’s License
- Capable of lifting and carrying a minimum of 75 pounds
- Willing and able to travel to various job sites, including overnight stays and short notice mobilization
- Capable of working in inclement weather and/or conditions
- Capable of covering distances afoot of 1/4 to 2 miles per day on railroad right of way
- Capable of working unsupervised at times
- Interacting effectively as a crew member
- Understand and follow verbal and visual communications
- Understand and respond to audible and visual signals and warnings
- Quickly learn and perform job duties
- Recognize, avoid, and report potential hazards
