Job Summary
Track Laborer supports Line Maintenance by performing physical labor to construct, repair, maintain, and demolish railroad tracks and related components. Duties include carrying and placing track materials with hand tools, attaching rails to ties, removing spikes, lifting and positioning crossties, connecting/disconnecting rail with track and welding materials, moving and tamping ballast, raising tracks and rails, cutting materials with torches and saws, drilling holes, and coordinating with heavy equipment while adhering to safety meetings and wearing PPE. Must be able to travel to various job sites, lift up to 75 pounds, work in inclement weather, and communicate effectively within a crew.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver’s License
- Capable of lifting and carrying a minimum of 75 pounds
- Willing and able to travel to various job sites, including overnight stays and short notice mobilization
- Capable of working in inclement weather
- Capable of covering distances afoot up to five miles per day on railroad right of way
- Capable of working unsupervised at times
- Interact effectively as a crew member
- Understand and follow verbal and visual communications
- Understand and respond to audible visual signals and warnings
- Quickly learn and perform job duties
- Recognize, avoid, and report potential hazards
