Job Summary
Perform solicitor duties for the Yukon Courts and judiciary, serving as the authority on court administration and judicial independence. Manage diverse files ranging from groundbreaking to complex matters involving conflicting legal principles, while supporting the discharge of judicial duties under federal and territorial statutes. Supervise two Senior Judicial Assistants, articling students, and summer students as required, working independently of executive and legislative branch lawyers. Report to the Chief Justice and Chief Judge, with occasional travel, evening, and weekend work.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in the practice of law in the areas of Litigation and/or Solicitor work
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Yukon or eligibility for admission to the Law Society of Yukon
- Current member in good standing of the Law Society of Yukon; or be currently eligible for admission in the Law Society of Yukon
- Security clearance
- Occasional travel in and out-of-territory
- Occasional evening and weekend work
Desired Qualifications
- Bilingual – English and French will be considered an asset
- Understanding of the history of Yukon First Nations and the ongoing process of reconciliation
- Knowledge of and experience working within criminal law
- Policy development experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Understanding of judicial independence
- Professionalism, including tact and diplomacy
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
