Title I Kindergarten Teacher Assistant

Job Summary

Support kindergarten teachers by demonstrating lessons, prompting students, and monitoring tests while managing classroom activities and special needs students with disabilities. Escort children to lunch, resource classes, and field trips, and supervise playgrounds or rooms when the teacher is absent. Maintain student records, attendance, and health charts, and operate office and audio-visual equipment. Participate in professional development related to core subject areas and assist in therapeutic crisis intervention. Perform morning and afternoon bus duty monitoring and small group reading or mathematics instruction as needed. Work under direct supervision of the classroom teacher and building administrator.

Required Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, the basics of child/adolescent growth and development and the goals and organization of public schools
  • Ability to assist in the implementation of an instructional program and to participate in monitoring and insuring appropriate student behavior
  • Ability to use computer hardware and software in classes to which assigned
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Patience and ability to work with children and/or young adults
  • Ability to work harmoniously with and provide a broad range of support to instructional staff
  • Ability to learn new behavior and classroom management techniques and to perform all required tasks
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Successfully completion of at least 60 college credit hours from an accredited college/university or pass the ParaPro exam as prepared by the Department of Education and preferably including courses in office practices and some formal or informal experience working with children

Desired Qualifications

  • At times, and in some assignments, specialized knowledge of particular equipment or a specialized skill, such as ability to communicate with children with special disability (blind and nonverbal) may be a preferred or desirable ability
