Job Summary

Tenant Companion (Casual positions) provides compassionate support with activities of daily living to foster tenant independence in a supportive housing setting. Responsibilities include observing and reporting changes in cognitive or health status, assisting with ambulation and use of ambulatory equipment, medication reminders, facilitating leisure activities, promoting independence and dignity, assisting with personal care and daily living tasks, supervising dining and food handling, helping with laundry and room upkeep, and working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to support residents’ wellbeing. Must hold Grade 12 or equivalent and a Valid Food Handlers Certificate; experience with older adults with dementia; English proficiency; ability to work independently; and strong communication and relationship-building skills. The role requires in-person work in Winnipeg, with days, evenings, and nights shifts, casual FTE, and adherence to safety and respectful workplace policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Valid Food Handlers Certificate
  • Experience with Older Adults with Dementia
  • Able to read, write and speak English.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to assist tenants in a manner that preserves dignity and promotes independence.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and respond appropriately when interacting with the tenant, or tenant’s family, and visitors.
  • Ability to build and maintain friendly, reciprocal, and warm relationships with the individual and groups.
  • Ability to flex and adapt to changes and/or situations based on meeting tenant needs and facility operations.
  • Ability to recognize, document, and report changes in a tenant’s ability to function day-to-day including cognitive and/or physical changes.
  • Ability to promote and practice safe work habits to reduce the potential for injury of self and/or others.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, comfortable, and well-organized unit.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for maintaining and enhancing current skills and knowledge regarding dementia care.
  • Physically and mentally able to perform all duties of the role.
