Job Summary
Temporary full-time reporter to cover non-traditional students and institutions during a staff leave, focusing on religious institutions, minority-serving institutions and workforce development. Responsibilities include producing 2-3 long-form stories per week (500-1200 words), 2-3 Quick Takes weekly (250-300 words each), and attending twice-weekly editorial meetings. The beat includes low-income, first-generation, undocumented students, adult learners and student parents, with emphasis on equity and access in higher education. Preference for candidates able to work in the Washington, DC area with a hybrid schedule (in-person three days a week in DC). Required qualifications include 2-3 years in education/public policy reporting, strong ability to report on inequities, and comfort meeting daily deadlines; familiarity with IPEDS/NCES is a plus.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in education or public policy reporting
- Ability to report on racial and socioeconomic inequities with rigor, nuance, and sensitivity
- Strong news judgment and ability to generate original story ideas
- Comfort working in a fast-paced digital newsroom with daily deadlines
- Familiarity with higher education data sources (IPEDS, NCES) is a plus
