Job Summary
Field-based role supporting NYSHI Hemlock Conservation Team in the Adirondacks region to survey for hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) and apply systemic insecticides to control HWA. Responsibilities include conducting field surveys for HWA, marking hemlock trees for treatment, assisting with data collection and entry, and performing data entry, all while adhering to safety protocols. Requires a high school diploma, ability to work outdoors in varied weather and rugged terrain, experience with field research and data collection, strong organizational and communication skills, and a valid New York State driver’s license with reliable transportation. Preferred qualifications include pesticide application experience, interest in insects, tree/insect identification, and experience using GPS/ArcGIS. This is a six-month, temporary, full-time position (39 hours/week) located on-site in Saratoga Springs, NY; travel may be required. Visa sponsorship is not available.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma and interest in scientific study
- Experience conducting field research and basic data collection and entry
- Ability to meet travel requirements and have reliable transportation as well as a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
- Ability to follow safety protocols and work in varied weather and rugged terrain
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent organizational skills
- Experience with pesticide application and insects is a plus
- Experience using ArcGIS or GPS is a plus
