Job Summary

Temporary Early Career Environmental Scientist needed to support WSP’s Earth & Environment Team in Nashville, TN or Kennesaw, GA. Under general supervision, perform natural resource field surveys including wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species surveys, and natural resource inventories; assist with data collection, documentation, and ensuring quality controls; apply basic professional environmental science work to assess ecological systems and water resources; maintain accurate records, use field notebooks and electronic systems, and adhere to safety procedures. Collaborate with planners, scientists, and engineers, travel to field sites as required, and contribute to environmental permitting and regulatory compliance efforts. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a life sciences field, analytical and communication skills, awareness of environmental laws and compliance practices, ability to work independently or in a team, and willingness to travel and work outdoors in varying conditions. Preferred WPIT status and plant identification skills.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field
  • Analytical skills, familiarity with research techniques, local/regional ecology and habitats, and applicable species/discipline
  • Familiar with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by health, safety and harassment policies
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from office and project locations
  • Periodic week-long travel for field surveys may be required depending on project-specific requirements
  • Ability to work outside under a variety of site and weather conditions

Desired Qualifications

  • Wetlands Professional in Training (WPIT) status (preferred)
  • Herbaceous and woody plant identification skills (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field (required)
  • Analytical skills for ecology and habitats
  • Familiarity with environmental laws, regulations, and compliance practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for a scientific and non-scientific audience
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Proficiency with office automation and data/documentation tools
  • Willingness to travel for field surveys
  • Commitment to safety policies and procedures
