Job Summary
Conduct daily husbandry for quarantine, acquisition, and off-exhibit animals at the offsite location, including tropical fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. Prepare diets, apply enrichment, and maintain front and back-of-house habitats to inspection standards. Collaborate with Animal Health on assessments and treatments, assist in animal transports between facilities, and monitor water quality, lighting, and flow systems. Record observations, maintain logs in TRACKs software, and report abnormal behaviors or maintenance issues to the Manager. Travel between onsite and offsite buildings as needed while adhering to OSHA and legal compliance standards.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in marine sciences, biology, zoology, or related field (or demonstrated comparable knowledge)
- 1+ years of experience caring for aquatic and terrestrial animals
- Must possess a valid driver's license or can obtain one within 6 months from the start of employment
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
- Ability to swim
- Ability to hear
- Ability to work at Shedd Aquarium's main onsite building if needed and travel between facilities if necessary
- Ability to learn other business operation software as assigned, including the animal management software TRACKs
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of water chemistry and quality as they pertain to living marine systems preferred
- Knowledge of proper animal care, training, and enrichment preferred
- Knowledge of collection planning processes preferred
