Job Summary

Respond to routine maintenance, installation, testing, calibration, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and limited electronic components on all telescopes and related equipment. Provide limited assistance in the operation and testing of telescope and operating equipment when required, and assist in the functional evaluation of newly installed equipment. May assist Telescope Operators with receiver/equipment changes, assist with indoor/outdoor painting, and maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition. Maintain records of maintenance activities using a PC and assist other maintenance and support personnel as assigned. Work both outdoors and indoors in a shop, climbing antenna stairs and ladders to heights above 100 feet, and lift equipment up to 50 pounds. Requires a valid New Mexico driver's license and the ability to read schematics, blueprints, and operating instructions.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Must hold and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license
  • Must be able to climb antenna stairs and ladders to heights of above 100 feet
  • Must be able to lift equipment up to 50 pounds (unassisted)
  • Must possess visual acuity (corrected is acceptable)
  • Must possess manual dexterity
  • Must possess hearing acuity
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as schematics, blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Must have a good working knowledge of rigging and material handling techniques
  • Must be able to operate a personal computer
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen

Desired Qualifications

  • Two years of experience as a radio telescope mechanic
  • Comparable experience in the industrial maintenance field
  • A working knowledge of machine shop, welding, and electrical techniques and procedures
  • Class A CDL
