Job Summary
Operates computer-aided dispatch to receive 9-1-1 calls and determine priority, then dispatch police, fire, ambulance or other emergency units as needed. Performs Emergency Medical Dispatch and crisis intervention with pre-arrival instructions, handles routine to critical incidents, and processes information across multiple computer systems while monitoring radios and telephones. Requires the ability to sign off on a documented readiness checklist, work a variety of shifts (including evenings, overnights, weekends), and maintain confidentiality. Strong emphasis on accuracy, situational awareness, customer service, and the ability to learn and operate specialized dispatch software (Omnigo CAD); must type at least 40 wpm and use office equipment proficiently. Supplemental duties include managing information requests, maintaining unit status, and supporting the Metro East Communications Center and Public Safety Department.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Ability to type 40 words per minute
- Ability to speak English clearly and accurately
- Ability to learn in-house computer systems
- Experience with using computers such as word processing, spreadsheets and databases
- Ability to use a multi-function telephone, fax, copy machine, calculator, and other office equipment
- Ability to work 4, 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts including evenings, overnights & weekends
- Reliability and regular attendance
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and be able to work independently
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to calmly multi-task dispatch services and provide crisis intervention
