Job Summary

Perform immunohematological procedures under routine and emergency protocols, including antibody detection, compatibility testing, and investigation of transfusion reactions. Process special transfusion orders for pediatrics, open-heart surgery, and transplant programs, issuing blood components via electronic cross-match and remote release. Maintain annual competency in computer downtime protocols, troubleshooting equipment failures, and responding to temperature alarms while adhering to Good Manufacturing Process standards. Document abnormal occurrences in the ETQ-Reliance system and participate in quality activities, proficiency surveys, and CAP concordance testing. Work in a highly regulated environment with direct patient care responsibility, requiring significant manual dexterity, attention to detail, and the ability to handle intermittent overtime and flexible shifts.

Required Qualifications

  • Must qualify as Testing Personnel, High Complexity Testing, under CLIA personnel requirements found in Subpart M of the Code of Federal Regulations
  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or chemical, physical, or biological sciences
  • Associate of Science degree in the Medical Laboratory Technology program
  • Current certification as Blood Bank Technologist (BB-ASCP), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS-ASCP), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT-ASCP), or equivalent
  • Immediate eligibility for certification as BB(ASCP) Technologist, MLS(ASCP), or MLT(ASCP) or equivalent
  • Successful completion of an immunohematology course through an accredited institution
  • Computer skills, including data entry and word processing
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to apply for and obtain clearance to access the client property
  • Significant manual dexterity
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently while also addressing multiple interruptions
  • Ability to adhere to a series of complex process steps that involve interacting with multiple computer systems and physically handling inventory
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and with staff from other departments
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds and push up to 40 pounds
  • Attention to detail
  • Prepared to work intermittent overtime, extended and/or consecutive shifts, and/or possibly at a different location during periods of inclement weather or other emergencies
  • Weekends, holidays, and flexible shifts/hours are required in this position

Desired Qualifications

  • BB (ASCP) and/or MLS (ASCP) certification
  • Prior laboratory testing experience
