Job Summary
Supervise, evaluate, and coordinate the interdisciplinary patient care team from admission through discharge or bereavement while serving as the primary patient advocate. Direct all patient care services, including volunteer and bereavement components, and manage the 24/7 team schedule and territory assignments to ensure equitable workload distribution. Review pending admissions, discharges, and utilization data to verify eligibility, appropriateness criteria, and cost-effective delivery of resources. Collaborate with physicians on palliative care measures, facilitate interdisciplinary team meetings, and conduct substantive chart reviews to ensure regulatory compliance and quality standards. Interview, select, train, and mentor staff; oversee payroll accuracy, approve bills, and resolve grievances or service failures promptly. Participate in on-call rotations, professional development activities, and program reviews to drive continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Reliable transportation with appropriate license and insurance coverage for driver and passengers
- Private telephone in home
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of primary medical and nursing care
- At least a working knowledge of oncologic nursing and palliative care
- Basic understanding of the interpersonal dynamics operative within the working relationships of an interdisciplinary health care team
- Knowledge of the process of dying and bereavement
- Working knowledge of VITAS information system (Vx) and the ability to utilize management reports
- Two years successful supervisory experience or equivalent in a health care organization
- Current and valid R.N. License to practice in the state where the VITAS program is located
