Job Summary
Teaching Assistants provide one-on-one and group support to Deaf and hard-of-hearing students at the Oregon School for the Deaf, aiding teachers with lesson delivery, behavior management, data collection, and activity preparation. Responsibilities include assisting with cognitive and self-help skills, monitoring student behavior, ensuring safety, assisting in transitions and transportation (including potential driving of a state vehicle), following lesson plans across elementary to high school levels, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and welfare guidelines. Candidates should be proficient in ASL, have experience with deaf or hard-of-hearing students, and be able to communicate in writing as well. Additional requirements include obtaining first aid certification and Oregon Type 10 license for transportation duties, successful completion of a background check, and meeting the organization's bilingual requirement within 12 weeks of hire. The role involves outdoor work portions, occasional lifting, and interaction with students in various school-day contexts.
Required Qualifications
- Equivalent to a high school diploma and six months of paid or unpaid experience working with or caring for children, preferably in groups; OR Two years of college courses in Education.
- Bilingual Requirement: ASLPI level 3 or SLPI:ASL Intermediate; must pass language assessment within 12 weeks of hire.
- Criminal history background and fingerprint-based criminal history record check upon hire as required by ORS 326.603 and OAR 581-021-0500.
