Job Summary

Coordinate instructional efforts with classroom teachers by planning teaching aids, supervising student groups in the cafeteria and library, and assisting with lesson assignments and grading. Operate various media and technology equipment including computers and projectors while presenting subject matter to students and maintaining classroom cleanliness. Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of the school bus, operate the assigned bus on route schedules, and maintain discipline among students. Report mechanical defects, accidents, and route changes to supervisors while ensuring compliance with traffic laws and safety regulations. Maintain a clean bus interior and complete all required transportation reports. Requires a CDL and bus license.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be Highly Qualified
  • NCLB (No Child Left Behind Requirements) for Teacher Assistants
  • Must have an Associate or Bachelors Degree in any field of study
  • Must have at least 48 semester hours of college level education
  • Must have completed the WorkKeys test from a community college and have 96 contact hours in reading, writing, and math strategies
  • Knowledge of basic needs and developmental stages of children
  • Knowledge of typical behavioral patterns and issues as it deals with children
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic
  • Ability to operate various media and technology equipment such as computer, television, VCR, cassette player, overhead projector, laminator, copy machine and various other office equipment
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situtions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, employees, and the general public
  • Required to obtain a CDL and Bus License
  • Required to serve as a substitute bus driver and/or regular bus route driver
  • Must be physically able to operate a school bus
  • Must be able to decelerate the bus and firmly apply the brake in an emergency situation
  • Must be able to turn the steering wheel of the vehicle rapidly in an emergency situation
  • Must be able to begin in seated position with seat belt fastened, parking brake released, and engine running, secure the bus (parking brake set, key removed), rise from the seat, exit through the rearmost emergency exit, and be in a position to assist passengers in exiting the bus within 20 seconds
  • Must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Graduation from high school
  • some experience driving large vehicles
  • some experience transporting humans preferred, or and equivalent combination of experience and training
