Job Summary
Teacher Assistant at Hebbville Academy supporting students with disabilities and personal care needs under the teacher(s).Responsibilities include assisting students with physical and mobility challenges, lifting and positioning as specified in program plans, supporting routines (toileting, dressing, feeding, hygiene), administering medications per guidelines, carrying out authorized medical procedures, supporting behavior management outcomes, and collaborating with teachers and the school community. The role emphasizes maintaining a safe, respectful environment, modeling appropriate conduct, recording observations as directed, and participating in training and certification to support interventions. Bus monitor duties are included. Requires First Aid/CPR, health-care trainings, assistive-technology skills, confidentiality, and ability to work with diverse student populations.
Required Qualifications
- High school completion certificate
- Successful completion of a minimum 2 year course of study certified from the Nova Scotia Department of Education, in a related field of study (e.g., education support program) with significant Special Education component
- Supervised practicum of no less than 100 hours
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Specific health care training or certification as required (e.g., Non Violent Crisis Intervention)
- Ability to perform physical requirements of the position
- Possess basic computer skills and training in assistive technology
- Commitment to confidentiality and privacy protocols
- Demonstrates ability to interact and build rapport with children and youth
- Team player
- Willingness to perform bus monitor duties
- Participation in required trainings/certifications to support interventions
- Understanding of regional policies and procedures regarding student care and safety
- Compliance with background checks (Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check and NS Child Abuse Register)
