Teacher Assistant (BES)

Job Summary
Teacher Assistant provides direct student support under teacher direction, assisting with personal care routines, transporting and positioning students as needed, assisting with routines (toileting, dressing, feeding, hygiene), administering medications per guidelines, and supporting behavior management and program implementation. Collaborates with teachers to maintain a positive, respectful classroom environment, ensures safety and confidentiality, records observations, and supports students with mobility and learning needs within Bridgewater Elementary School. Requires a bona fide occupational qualification in education support, completion of relevant coursework with practicum, and mandatory safety/health certifications.
Required Qualifications
- High school completion certificate
- Minimum 2-year course of study certified from the NS Department of Education with significant Special Education component
- Supervised practicum of at least 100 hours
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Specific health care support training or certification as required (e.g., Non Violent Crisis Intervention)
- Ability to perform physical requirements of the position
- Basic computer skills and training in assistive technology
- Demonstrated ability to interact positively with children and youth
- Confidentiality and privacy awareness
- Team-oriented and collaborative mindset
- Compliance with Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Checks and NS Child Abuse Register Check
