Job Summary
Provide one-on-one support to students during activities and lessons to help them engage with the curriculum in our preschool and special education programs. Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment that promotes social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development while assisting with daily routines, meals, and transitions. Monitor student behavior, implement positive management strategies, and ensure safety during free play and outdoor activities. Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and families to discuss student progress and assist in preparing instructional materials. Participate in emergency interventions outlined by SCIP-R trainings and BIPs. Earn your NYS Teaching Assistant certification to increase your hourly rate to $21.00/hour. This 12-month position runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Join HeartShare, which has championed and empowered New Yorkers for over 150 years.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- NYS Teaching Assistant certification
- Experience working with children
- Must not have been previously employed by the D.O.E. in the past year
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
- Patience, empathy, and a passion for supporting diverse learners
- Close vision, distance vision and ability to focus
- Must be able to stoop, bend, and sometimes lift or push wheelchairs of children being served
- Must be able to walk to and from various locations in the building
- Must be able to perform physical intervention techniques to aid children in challenging moments
- Must be able to adhere to all health and safety policies and procedures while supervising children at all times
- Must be able to participate in emergency interventions outlined by SCIP-R trainings and BIPs
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with children, preferably in a special education or childcare setting
