Job Summary
Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons for special education students, implementing therapeutic or skill development programs that align with Individual Education Plans. Conduct ongoing assessments of student learning styles and achievement through formal and informal testing while collaborating with parents and staff to set and meet IEP goals. Manage student behavior, administer discipline, and provide personal care, medical care, and toileting support as required by student needs. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, oversee instructional aides, and participate in IEP Committee meetings and staff development activities. Work in self-contained, team, or itinerant capacity for 187 days, complying with federal, state, and district regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from accredited university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate that matches the content area and grade level of the assignment
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments
- Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
- Knowledge of Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting and meeting process and implementation
- Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
- Effective communication skills
- Regular and reliable attendance
- May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities
- Control behavior through physical restraint
- Assist non-ambulatory students
- Maintain emotional control under stress
- Work prolonged or irregular hours
- Exposure to biological hazards
