Job Summary

Direct maintenance and repair of Antarctic equipment, functioning as the recognized technical expert for the shop and field. Perform complex repairs on mobile and stationary equipment, diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic faults, and manage corrective maintenance priorities. Direct skilled workers, administrators, and helpers in assigned tasks, assigning personnel, monitoring quality, and ensuring timely completion. Maintain records, submit progress reports, generate supply requisitions, and provide equipment assessments while upholding safety and quality standards. Train crew members to foster technical competence and a healthy safety culture. Operate heavy equipment for traverses to the South Pole and maintain construction, agriculture, and diesel support equipment in remote field camps under severe conditions.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in machinery trades, including small engine, automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, or relevant mechanical experience
  • Must have proven leadership capabilities
  • Knowledge of sound mechanical practices as applied to commercial and special purpose equipment, using chemicals and tools, methods of handling heavy mechanisms, internal combustion engines and electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  • Team player and group dynamics are of the utmost importance
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position
  • Must participate in community programs, such as 'house-mouse' (chores), 'daisy-picking' (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives
  • Valid Driver's License issued in the United States
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization
  • US Citizenship

Desired Qualifications

  • Two years' experience in a supervisory or leadership position
  • Two years' training at a technical school
