Job Summary
Tax Staff Accountants are entry-level employees that perform various tax-related tasks under supervision, including preparing tax returns of lesser complexity (individual, business, nonprofit, trust and estate) and assisting with portions of larger tax assignments. They learn to comply with federal/state tax laws, apply tax knowledge, develop efficient work habits, and gain proficiency in tax software and research. Responsibilities grow with demonstrated skill and may include depreciation reporting, tax projections, mapping general ledger trial balances for tax purposes, and providing basic accounting services to client books. The role emphasizes professional and ethical standards, effective written and oral communication, and ongoing professional development (CPA pursuit/additional certification and continuing education).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting (with several tax credits preferably) or Master’s degree in accounting/tax
- 150-hour credit requirement for CPA eligibility
- Current and valid CPA license or pursuing CPA license by taking and passing state CPA exam
- Proficiency with computer, tax-related and spreadsheet software programs and calculator
- Clear and concise English communication (verbal and written)
- Continuing professional education as established by AICPA and state society, averaging 40 hours annually
- Overtime and occasional travel for client meetings/seminars; occasional same-day travel
