Job Summary
Tax Manager - Product & Operations will serve as the German Subject Matter Expert and play a key role in Alpaca’s expansion into Europe. You will interpret German tax codes, contribute to product calculation logic, assist in engineering build-out, and act as a primary contact for tax authorities. Responsibilities include translating tax requirements (e.g., Abgeltungsteuer logic, capital gains offset rules) for product managers and backend developers, supporting pan-European expansion with focus on Spain and France, reviewing tax logic during design and testing calculation engines, and coordinating with German authorities (BZSt) and external tax advisors. You will monitor regulatory changes across core and target jurisdictions, automate tax-related workflows to reduce manual reviews, and liaise with auditors and compliance partners. Requirements emphasize German tax knowledge, ability to communicate complex concepts to engineers, and fluency in English and German; preferences include experience with other EU tax regimes and additional languages.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: 4-7+ years of experience in capital markets taxation, financial services tax advisory (Big 4), or a hands-on Tax/Operations role within a fintech or brokerage.
- Strong knowledge of German personal tax law, particularly regarding financial products and automated withholding models.
- Translational mindset to communicate complex tax concepts to non-experts; collaboration with software engineers.
- Professional fluency in English and native/near-native fluency in German.
- Preferred: experience with Spain (IRPF) and France (PFU / Prélèvement Forfaitaire Unique); education in Tax, Accounting, Finance, or Law; German Steuerberater qualification; exposure to retail brokerage operations or international client portfolios.
