Job Summary
Tamil Reviewer/Editor/Certifier for the Department of Justice Linguistic Support Services. Tasks include translation of documents and audio/video content, transcription and interpretation (court/deposition), handling materials across medical, scientific, financial, legal, and governmental domains, with strict confidentiality. Requires five years’ experience in Tamil with strong English editing, ILR 4 or equivalent, U.S. residency in the last 5 years, prior experience with law enforcement/legal departments, U.S. citizenship, and proficiency with CAT tools (SDL Trados Studio); remote work available with potential travel; National Capital Region/CONUS locations; active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the required language with superior skills in English and editing
- Qualifying ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (not necessarily consecutive)
- Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Know both English and foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual contexts, including slang, regionalisms
- Know specialized vocabulary in both English and the foreign language related to Government’s varied roles and missions; possess research and analytical skills for terminology
- Write in native language fluently with professional command of the non-native language
- Translate in a manner that is factually and conceptually accurate without changes, omissions, or additions
- Preserve tone and register of source language materials
- Abide by relevant code of linguist ethics
- Proficient in using CAT tools, with emphasis on SDL Trados Studio
- Clearance: Active Public Trust or higher security clearance
Desired Qualifications
- Five (5) years of experience in the required language with strong English and editing skills
- ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Residence requirement: must have lived in the U.S. for at least 3 of the last 5 years
- At least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Tamil with formal vocabularies across legal, diplomatic, casual contexts, including slang and regionalisms
- Knowledge of specialized vocabulary in English and Tamil related to government missions and terminology
- Fluent writing in Tamil with professional command of English, with ability to translate accurately without changes or omissions
- Ability to preserve tone and register in source materials
- Adherence to linguist ethics
- Proficiency with Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, especially SDL Trados Studio
- Active Public Trust or higher security clearance
