Job Summary
Conduct hazard analysis, risk assessments, and safety assessments to identify potential hazards in missile systems throughout the development lifecycle. Define and implement safety requirements, standards, and guidelines while performing functional hazard assessments, fault tree analysis, and failure mode and effects analysis. Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate safety considerations into system architecture and support the development of safety cases and documentation. Participate in safety review boards, present assessments to stakeholders and regulatory authorities, and lead investigations into safety-related incidents to propose corrective actions. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in systems safety engineering processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering (e.g., Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering) or a related technical field.
- Proven experience as a Systems Safety Engineer in the defense, aerospace, or a safety-critical industry.
- Familiarity with safety standards and regulations, such as MIL-STD-882, DEF STAN 00-056, and/or DO-178C.
- Strong understanding of safety analysis techniques and methodologies, including FTA, FMEA, FHA, and system-level safety assessments.
- Experience with safety-related tools and software applications used in safety engineering.
- Knowledge of systems engineering principles, requirements management, and systems integration.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to work across multidisciplinary teams.
- Eligibility for security clearance as required.
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with missile systems or other complex weapon systems.
- Experience with safety assessment of software-intensive systems.
- Knowledge of functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508
- Experience of facilitating/undertaking Hazard Identification and Assessment exercises using some or all of the following: Hazard and Operability Studies (HazOpS); Fault Tree Analysis; Event Tree Analysis;
