Job Summary
Develop test plans, cases, and procedures for the Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System, conducting verification activities to confirm aircraft control behavior under real or simulated failure conditions. Perform data analyses and test report generation from verification campaigns, manage problem reports, and resolve technical issues to closure. Build automation capabilities for test execution and collaborate with the Analysis Team on simulation cases supporting program milestones. Prepare verification artifacts, briefing materials, and documentation for design reviews, safety-of-flight reports, and FAA regulatory audits, including Type Certification documents. Report technical risks and provide guidance to team members on verification execution. This role is based at Joby's Santa Cruz, CA facility with on-site requirements and occasional travel to nearby locations. The position targets a candidate with 3+ years of aerospace verification experience in flight controls or propulsion, proficient in tools like Python, MATLAB/Simulink, and Polarion, within the context of Joby's final FAA certification stages for its eVTOL aircraft.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics
- Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering
- Application of disciplined systems engineering processes, including requirements management, safety assessment concepts
- Development of requirements-based Verification Test Case and Test Procedures development
- Experience working in a laboratory test environment
- Experience in a verification or test engineering role within an aerospace or technology company within complex systems environments
- Skills and ability to address technical issues, analyze test results, deduce root causes, and provide solutions to engineering problems
- Familiarity with digital electronic equipment operating in an integrated system
- Willingness to learn the operation of aerospace equipment applicable to Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft
- Working knowledge and experience with digital engineering application tools, or the ability to rapidly learn and apply them
- Excellent verbal and technical writing skills in English
- Ability to work both collaboratively and in a self-sufficient manner
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Docs
- For this role, the candidate must be on site based at Joby's Santa Cruz, CA location
- Willingness to visit and work at other nearby Joby facilities as needed to perform assignments
Desired Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of aerospace industry experience in systems verification, Flight Controls, or Propulsion system development
- Experience integrating and testing complex, highly integrated systems
- Familiarity with the verification aspects Development Assurance processes according to SAE ARP4754 and RTCA DO178
- Familiarly with digital Electric Motor control principles and mechanization
- Automation of execution and data analyses verification activities
- Working knowledge or the ability to support of DO-160G Environmental Qualification testing and test data review
- Working knowledge and experience with tools used in verification activities such as Grafana, Python
- Working knowledge or studies in aircraft systems, relevant equipment, or System Engineering principles
- Familiarity with Certification Regulations
- Experience with electric vehicle or electric powertrain technology
- Proficiency with Requirements Management tools (Siemens Polarion is a plus)
- Experience with Atlassian tools including Jira, Confluence, and Crucible
- Experience with model-based engineering using MATLAB/Simulink
- Familiarity with Dassault Systems Engineering and Management tools (Enovia)
