Job Summary
Systems Engineer, Energy Storage at Redwood Materials leads the system engineering effort for a new energy-storage product. You will define clear requirements, evaluate and down-select architectures, drive decisions across mechanical, electrical, and software teams, and implement model-driven design in a fast-moving startup environment. Responsibilities include optimizing architecture for metrics like cost, efficiency, energy/power density, and availability; owning system-level performance and requirements; conducting system modeling, simulation, and testing; establishing interfaces across components; reinforcing safety and reliability via DFMEAs, risk assessments, and hazard analyses; ensuring compliance with UL standards. Required qualifications include a BS/MS in Mechanical Science or Electrical Engineering, 5+ years in design or system engineering, strong physics understanding of electrical/mechanical systems, experience with power electronics, proficiency in Python or Matlab for modeling, familiarity with Doors/Jama for requirements, and excellent communication. The role is full-time in San Francisco, CA, with a California pay range of $127,500–$248,500 USD.
Required Qualifications
- BS or MS in Mechanical Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- 5+ years of design engineering or system engineering experience
- Excellent first-principles physics understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy transformation, and basic thermal mechanics
- Experience with power electronics product development
- Proficiency in system modeling tools (Python or Matlab)
- Experience with requirement management tools (Doors, Jama, etc)
- Demonstrated ability to write clear and testable engineering requirements
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
