Job Summary
Senior Systems Administrator (Level III or IV) to design, implement, and operate Red Hat Enterprise Linux infrastructure supporting the end-to-end science data pipeline for NRAO’s flagship observatories. Lead transition to GitOps-driven infrastructure; migrate legacy Docker Swarm services to Kubernetes; develop Python and SQL automation to monitor data pipeline health and generate operational metrics; serve as Level-3 escalation for production incidents; conduct root-cause analysis and post-mortems; mentor junior administrators; participate in Agile development cycles; create deployment packages and user documentation; contribute to cross-site standardization via the NRAO Common Computing Environment; travel to NRAO sites (VLA, ALMA, international centers).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Astronomy, Physics, or equivalent professional experience
- At least four years of progressive responsibility in mission-critical or scientific computing environments
- Expertise with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8/9; RHCE or RHCA certification strongly preferred
- Experience with automation/orchestration tools (Ansible, Kubernetes/OpenShift, Docker Swarm)
- Experience with GitOps workflows (ArgoCD or Flux)
- Experience with Python 3 automation and SQL (PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL)
- Familiarity with monitoring/alerting stacks (Telegraf, Prometheus, Grafana) and incident response
- Ability to communicate complex technical conditions to diverse stakeholders
- Ability to travel to NRAO sites including VLA/ALMA
