Job Summary
Senior Systems Administrator role (Level III or IV) responsible for maintaining the Red Hat Enterprise Linux infrastructure supporting NRAO’s end-to-end science data pipeline across global observatories. Lead transition to GitOps-driven infrastructure, migrate legacy Docker Swarm services to Kubernetes, and develop automation tools in Python and SQL to monitor pipeline health and trigger alerts. Serve as Level-3 escalation for production incidents, participate in agile cycles, prepare deployment packages and user documentation, and mentor junior admins. Travel to NRAO sites including VLA, ALMA (Chile), and international operations centers. Must hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience, and have at least four years of progressive Linux systems administration experience in mission-critical or scientific environments. The role requires U.S. work authorization; NRAO cannot sponsor H-1B visas for this position.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Astronomy, Physics, or equivalent professional experience
- At least four years of progressive responsibility in Linux systems administration in mission-critical or scientific computing environments
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux expertise (RHEL 8/9) and related automation/orchestration tools
- Experience with GitOps workflows (ArgoCD or Flux) and container platforms (Kubernetes/OpenShift, Docker Swarm)
- Proficiency in Python and SQL for automation, monitoring, and data-health reporting
- Experience with monitoring stacks (Telegraf, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki) and alerting systems
- Ability to design, deploy, and operate end-to-end data pipelines in a scientific computing context
- Strong communication skills and ability to translate complex technical conditions for non-technical audiences
- U.S. work authorization; no H-1B sponsorship currently available
