Job Summary
System Safety Engineer (SLS Upper Stage) to support NASA's Space Launch System at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. Responsibilities include hazard identification, risk assessment, presentation to leadership and risk authorities, safety requirements compliance and documentation review, participation in design/operations trade studies, hazard control verification, and preparation of safety verification evidence for reviews. The role requires coordinating with NASA, prime contractors, and commercial upper-stage providers across propulsion, avionics, software, structures, cryogenics, separation, abort/contingency, and ground-interface hazards. The candidate will contribute to ensuring safety assurance for upper-stage changes, commercial hardware integration, and Artemis mission objectives, with emphasis on traceable hazard controls, verification planning, and risk communication. Proficiency in hazard analyses (SSARs), safety verification activities, verification plans, and program documentation (PWS, SRD, CEI, DRDs) is expected.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
- 5+ years of related work experience
- Experience in system safety hazard analyses and documenting results (SSARs, hazard reports)
- Experience with Fault Tree Analysis, Functional Failure Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, or similar system safety analyses
