Job Summary
System Arborist in Maui role responsible for administering, directing, and evaluating Hawaiian Electric’s vegetation management programs across Roadside, Rights-of-Way, and Customer Service programs. Leads on-site vegetation management contractors, ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations (ANSI Z133, ANSI A300), conducts field inspections (including helicopters), analyzes data and reports, plans and directs program activities, and provides technical guidance and presentations to internal/external stakeholders. Requires collaboration with teams, budgeting and forecasting input, and experience in arboriculture/urban forestry with strong communication and leadership skills. Expect travel to field sites, contractor coordination, and ensuring program effectiveness and cost containment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in urban forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, or related field
- ISA Certified Arborist
- ISA Utility Specialist Certification (preferred)
- Working knowledge of vegetation management crew structures, equipment, tools, techniques and methodologies
- Working knowledge of electric utility transmission and distribution construction and maintenance operations with emphasis on vegetation management
- Basic knowledge of statistical analysis and its application to tree inventory and performance management systems
- Working knowledge of tree growth regulator and herbicide application methodology, environmental fate and mobility
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes and regulations related to vegetation management operations and endangered species (preferred)
- Working knowledge of comprehensive contractor performance evaluation systems (preferred)
- Working knowledge of local tree identification and growth characteristics (preferred)
- Proficiency with computers and software (e.g., Excel, Access, Word)
- Must have or be able to qualify for a Hawaii driver’s license
- LEAN continuous improvement principles
- SafeStart principles
