Job Summary
Switchgear Technician sought in Chesapeake, VA to perform hands-on disassembly, inspection, repair, reassembly, and testing of low and medium voltage switchgear. Responsibilities include diagnosing complex issues involving protective relaying and switchgear controls in shop and field settings, conducting in-shop breaker overhauls and comprehensive field testing of power distribution systems, and training personnel in troubleshooting, repairing, and testing techniques. The role requires significant travel to customer sites, a strong foundation in NETA/IEEE/NEMA standards, and broad knowledge of switchgear types. A high school diploma is required; higher vocational training and NICET/NATE certifications are preferred. Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 lbs, working at heights, and passing medical, drug, and background screenings. A valid driver’s license is required. Competitive hourly rate ($35-$42/hr) with overtime, comprehensive benefits, and a company vehicle are offered.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience in the power distribution industry
- deep understanding of NETA standards, IEEE specifications, and NEMA specifications
- Strong application knowledge of all switchgear types
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Higher vocational training (e.g., AVO Substation Maintenance) and NICET Level 1-4 certifications preferred but not required
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs, work at heights, pass medical physical, and clear drug and background screenings
- Valid driver’s license and willingness for significant travel
