Job Summary
Teach swim lessons in the water to assigned groups while ensuring all equipment is accessible and maintaining skills checklists for each student. Model YMCA values of caring, honesty, and respect to welcome, connect, and support members, guests, and staff. Act as a leader in emergency situations, report accidents per the Emergency Communication Action Plan, and ensure all participants actively follow the center's Emergency Operations Plan. Remain alert, continuously scan pool areas, and perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for water rescue. Complete and maintain required certifications including CPR, First Aid, and AED, while attending staff meetings and fundraising efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 16 years of age
- Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check
- Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints
- Ability to pass lifeguard water test and meet requirements of ongoing drills
- Must be able to remain alert
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations
Desired Qualifications
- Red Cross Lifeguarding/YMCA Lifeguarding preferred
- Cross over/certified to YMCA Lifeguarding within six months of hire
- Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Lesson preferred
- Cross over/certified as YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor within six months of hire
