Job Summary
Instruct swimming lessons with prepared plans, train and supervise class aides, and build authentic relationships with students and parents while encouraging their involvement. Maintain attendance and progress records, organize class equipment, and report any damage. Follow all YMCA policies, including emergency and safety procedures, and complete incident reports as necessary. Foster an inclusive environment by participating in efforts to support the Y's commitment to equity and diversity. Attend all staff meetings and training as required. This part-time role operates in and around the pool area seven days a week, with hours dependent on aquatics department needs.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16
- CPR/AED for the professional rescuer certification
- YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid certification
- Administering Oxygen certification or ability to receive certification from the Lake Superior YMCA after hire
- Demonstrated swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
- YMCA Swim Instructor v6 Certification (required within 6 months of hire)
- Commitment of supporting principles of equal opportunity and affirmative action to achieve a diverse work environment
- Ability to pass a background check
- Ability to perform all skills required for First Aid
- Ability to perform CPR/AED certifications
- Ability to frequently stand

- Ability to follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures
- Ability to complete incident and accident reports as necessary
- Ability to attend all staff meetings and training as required
- Ability to build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents
- Ability to foster an inclusive environment appreciative of differences in the workplace

Desired Qualifications
- Lifeguard certification
- At least one (1) year experience working with youth
