Job Summary
Conduct swim classes in accordance with the YMCA's Swimming Lesson Program, creating a welcoming, nurturing environment while maximizing participant engagement. Exercise mature judgment to ensure safety, motivate students toward self-awareness, and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and staff. Complete all required class paperwork, communicate student progress to parents, and participate in mandatory in-service trainings. Uphold YMCA core values and core values when interacting within facilities and the community. Work scheduled shifts including weekends with previously approved substitutes, maintaining a positive demeanor in hot, humid conditions. Minimum age is 15; lifeguard certification required for applicants aged 15.
Required Qualifications
- Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Swim Instructor will provide direct leadership, instruction, motivation, and a safe environment for students in swimming classes.
- Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing and genuine for all members and guests.
- Exercise mature judgment and strong decision making, especially as it relates to safety.
- Develop rapport and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Able to work with other staff as part of a team.
- Conduct swim classes in accordance with Y of the USAs Swimming Lesson Program in an enthusiastic and exciting way while maximizing swimmer participation in every class period.
- Motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics.
- Complete and turn in all class paperwork as required by supervisor.
- Communicate student progress to participants and/or their parents throughout the session.
- Maintain a positive and responsible attitude and demeanor at all times.
- Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings is mandatory.
- Uphold the core values of the YMCA when interacting with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community.
- Work scheduled shifts including weekend shifts.
- Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.
- Must be able to understand the way children learn at various ages and relate to them in a fun-loving, engaging, and captivating way.
- Must take and pass an advanced swimming test.
- Must have a current state approved First-Aid certification and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
- Ability to exercise mature judgment and sound decision making, ensure safety of participants, and relate to people in a positive, but firm manner.
- Must be able to effectively communicate information on YMCA programs to members and participants.
- Must be observant and safety conscious.
- Minimum age for this position is 15 years.
- A requirement for applicants aged 15 (only) is lifeguard certification for this position.
- Must be able to teach in hot, humid environments.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs and have full range of body movement.
