Job Summary
Provide direct teaching leadership to each swimming participant across all National YMCA programs, from Parent-Child to Adult, while maintaining aquatic standards and modeling the SMART pledge. Supervise children in locker rooms and pools, interpret student progress for parents, and keep lesson plans, records, and award cards organized. Conduct yourself professionally with staff and participants, report suspicious activity to ensure a safe environment, and maintain clean, organized facilities and equipment. Complete required trainings on child abuse prevention, youth development, and service culture within 90 days of hire. Maintain emergency procedure knowledge and physical endurance for extended aerobic activity.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- current YMCA Swim Instructor or Red Cross WSI certification
- Professional Rescue CPR or Basic Life Support, AED and First Aid certification
- Child Abuse Prevention in an Aquatics Environment training
- Foundations of Listen First
- Principles of Youth Development
- Engaging with Families
- Youth Affirmations: Distinguishing Between Praise and Encouragement
- effective communication and human relations skills
- ability to relate to children and adults from all socio-economic segments of the community
- ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds
- ability to maintain continual physical endurance for thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic activity
- ability to give and follow detailed instructions
- ability to work outdoors for extended periods
- ability to be alert at all times
- acceptable hearing and visual capabilities
- auditory and verbal capabilities to effectively communicate with students, parents, and staff
- authorization to work in the U.S.
