Job Summary
Plan and teach swim instruction to participants across beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, adapting activities to individual abilities and managing group lessons of up to ten swimmers. Maintain equipment inventory by selecting, storing, and issuing gear while enforcing safety rules and regulations for the Aquatic facility. Evaluate participants' physical conditions to offer alternative movements, monitor progress through conversation and written materials, and respond to emergency situations per YMCA protocol. Assist swimmers of various body weights in the water while demonstrating required swimming and water safety skills. Attend staff meetings and inservice training to maintain certification and exchange ideas with colleagues.
Required Qualifications
- At least 15 years of age
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision
- The employee is regularly required to demonstrate swimming and water safety skills in accordance with YMCA standards and maintain certification-levels of physical and mental readiness
- The employee must assist swimmers of various body weights in water
- The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and move around on the pool deck and in the pools to assist patrons of all ages in the pools
- The employee is frequently required to utilize oral and listening comprehension and expression to teach swim lesson participants, observe distress signals in the Aquatics Environment, and enforce safety regulations
Desired Qualifications
- YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification preferred
