Job Summary
Plan and teach swim instruction to participants in beginner, intermediate, and advanced sessions, adapting activities to individual abilities and levels. Maintain equipment inventory by selecting, storing, and issuing gear as needed. Evaluate swimmers' physical conditions to offer alternative movements and enforce safety rules regarding the aquatic facility. Monitor participant progress, administer feedback through conversation and written materials, and track attendance for groups of up to ten. Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA protocol and attend staff meetings and inservice training to maintain skills.
Required Qualifications
- At least 15 years of age
- Completion of YMCA required training upon hire
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
- Exhibits great communication and listening skills to work with staff and members, delivering a quality experience
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision
- The employee is regularly required to demonstrate swimming and water safety skills in accordance with YMCA standards and maintain certification-levels of physical and mental readiness
- The employee must assist swimmers of various body weights in water
- The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and move around on the pool deck and in the pools to assist patrons of all ages in the pools
- The employee is frequently required to utilize oral and listening comprehension and expression to teach swim lesson participants, observe distress signals in the Aquatics Environment, and enforce safety regulations
Desired Qualifications
- YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification preferred
