Job Summary
Provide leadership, instruction, and motivation for swim team participants while maintaining a safe environment. Support the lead coach during structured practices, track daily attendance, and attend invitationals and meets as assigned. Maintain open communication with parents to promote the program within association guidelines and assist in social event planning. Respond to policy violations and reports of suspicious behavior following mandated reporting requirements. Complete incident reports, secure team equipment, and adhere to all safety and abuse risk management procedures.
Required Qualifications
- At least 17 years old
- 2 + years' experience as a competitive swimmer
- Proficiency of swim skills in accordance with YMCA standards
- Strong foundation in stroke mechanics
- Ability to communicate effectively with swimmers and parents
- Current Basic Life Support (CPR), AED & Basic First Aid certification
- Annual certification in BLS/AED
- Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguarding certification
- ARC Safety Training for Swim Coaches online certification
- STSC in person certification (if no Lifeguard certification is held)
- Ability to instruct, observe, and demonstrate to participants proper stroke and competitive swim techniques
- Ability to lift and pull equipment 50 pounds
- Ability to lift a small to average size child
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Good physical condition to coach swimming
- Ability to work inside and outside (i.e. humidity, hot, cold, inclement weather conditions)
- Ability to concentrate in a loud environment
- Ability to complete the Predictive Index Behavioral Assessment
- Attend required Abuse Risk Management training
- Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants
- Follow employee and volunteer screening requirements
- Use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk
- Provide employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk
- Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers
- Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk
- Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations
- Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors
- Follow mandated reporting requirements
- Communicate to all employees and volunteers the Y's commitment to protect our members from abuse
- Attend staff meetings and training courses as scheduled
- Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures
- Support the associations' philanthropy efforts
- Subject to required, random drug testing as scheduled
- Maintain an orderly environment
- Secure team equipment at the end of practice/meets
- Report damaged equipment
- Complete incident and accident reports as necessary
- Assist in all areas as assigned
- Complete all projects as assigned by the supervisor
