Job Summary
Provide leadership, instruction, and motivation for swim team participants while attending meets, team functions, and social events as assigned. Support the lead coach during structured practices, track daily attendance, and maintain open communication with parents to cultivate a collaborative environment. Ensure a safe environment for all participants by adhering to abuse risk management training, screening requirements, and mandatory reporting procedures. Maintain an orderly environment, secure equipment, and complete incident reports as necessary. This role requires a minimum age of 17, two years of competitive swim experience, and current CPR, AED, and lifeguarding certifications. Shifts typically run from 3:30 PM to 9:00 PM, including weekends and early mornings, with an hourly rate of $17.00 to $18.50.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum age of 17
- 2 + years' experience as a competitive swimmer
- Proficiency of swim skills in accordance with YMCA standards
- Strong foundation in stroke mechanics
- Ability to communicate effectively with swimmers and parents
- Current Basic Life Support (CPR), AED & Basic First Aid certification
- Annual certification in BLS/AED
- Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguarding certification
- ARC Safety Training for Swim Coaches online certification
- STSC in person certification if no Lifeguard certification is held
- Ability to instruct, observe, and demonstrate to participants proper stroke and competitive swim techniques
- Ability to lift and pull equipment 50 pounds
- Ability to lift a small to average size child
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Good physical condition to coach swimming
- Ability to work inside and outside (i.e. humidity, hot, cold, inclement weather conditions)
- Ability to concentrate in a loud environment
- Attendance at required Abuse Risk Management training
- Adherence to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants
- Completion of employee and volunteer screening requirements
- Use of screening instruments to screen for abuse risk
- Ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk
- Regular feedback regarding boundaries with consumers
- Adherence to policies and procedures related to abuse risk
- Response to policy and procedure violations using the Y's disciplinary procedures
- Serious and confidential response to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors
- Follow of mandated reporting requirements
- Communication of the Y's commitment to protect members from abuse
- Attendance at staff meetings and training courses as scheduled
- Adherence to all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures
- Adherence to emergency and safety procedures
- Support of the associations' philanthropy efforts
- Subject to required, random drug testing as scheduled
