Job Summary
Lead and supervise two- or three-person survey crews on boundary, topographic, right-of-way, and construction layout surveys across Upstate New York while performing office-based survey production. Set up and oversee robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, and drones; establish accurate horizontal and vertical control; and perform field calculations, construction staking, and data processing. Review assigned scopes, plans, and control information before fieldwork begins, assign daily tasks, and monitor productivity to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient completion. Train and mentor junior crew members in field methods, equipment use, and safety protocols. Process raw field data, prepare field packages, and conduct quality reviews of deliverables before submission. Coordinate with survey managers, project managers, and office staff regarding schedules, site access, and conflicts. Shift between field leadership and office production based on workload and project priorities. Maintain accountability for field measurements, notes, sketches, and daily reports. Lead daily safety briefings and ensure compliance with OSHA requirements and company policies.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least five years of progressive land surveying experience, including survey crew leadership and office-based survey production
- Demonstrated proficiency with robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, digital levels, electronic data collectors, and survey data-processing workflows
- Ability to independently perform field and office calculations for control, boundary, topographic, as-built, and construction layout assignments
- Working knowledge in Carlson Survey, MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or comparable survey and CAD software
- Ability to prepare field packages, coordinate point and control files, review raw data, and support accurate survey deliverables
- Ability to read and interpret survey plans, construction drawings, record maps, deeds, easements, legal descriptions, and utility information
- Strong quality-control, leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and the ability to operate a company vehicle
- Ability to travel regularly throughout Albany, Remsen, and other assigned Upstate New York locations
- Be prepared for random drug testing
Desired Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering technology, or a related discipline
- Experience supporting New York State transportation, utility, municipal, infrastructure, or public-works projects
- Experience with boundary research, survey adjustment, digital terrain modeling, surfaces, quantities, or survey deliverable preparation
- Certified Survey Technician or other relevant survey certification
